TORRANCE, CALIF., February 11, 2025 – The 90s were the decade of O.J. Simpson and the white Ford Bronco, the first internet browser, and in the South Bay, the birth of the SBCCOG. In celebration of its 30th Anniversary, the South Bay Cities Council of Governments (SBCCOG) is inviting the community to submit its best photographs that capture the essence of the South Bay during this iconic era.

The South Bay 90s Rewind Photo Contest specifically calling for creative and artistic shots of the South Bay taken in the 1990s or recent photos that capture memories or the spirit of the era. Examples of subject matter could include—but are not limited to—street scenes, iconic local landmarks, businesses, everyday life or people that defined the community at this time in history. The contest is open to all residents of the South Bay whether hobbyists or professionals. “The SBCCOG has helped cities make tangible progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving transportation, decreasing homelessness and shrinking the digital divide,” said Rodney Tanaka, mayor pro tem, city of Gardena and SBCCOG chair. “As we prepare to celebrate these wins and chart a path forward at our upcoming General Assembly, we invite the community to join us as we look back at the era at when it all began.”

In the spring of 1994, an organization called the South Bay Cities Association formally became a council of governments for the South Bay’s 15 cities and the City of Los Angeles. Since then, the SBCCOG has worked in concert with its member cities to develop programs to address a variety of issues impacting the subregion, including working with utility partners to promote water- and energy-saving programs through the SBCCOG’s Environmental Services Center; developing programs to decrease homelessness; improving transportation through management of Measure M and Measure R subregional funds and developing the Local Travel Network; and increasing digital equity through creation of a fiber optic broadband network.

Entries must be received by 5 p.m., March 7, 2025. Ten finalists will be selected by the SBCCOG staff and board of directors. The winning image will be announced and displayed at the General Assembly on March 27, 2025.
