The South Bay Cities Council of Governments (SBCCOG) is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its South Bay Environmental Service Center (SBESC) program by calling for the community to submit photos that demonstrate sustainable action in their cities. For two decades, the SBESC has worked with its member cities and their utilities to provide resources about energy efficiency, water, conservation, transportation options (such as carpool and vanpool) waste reduction and recycling to South Bay cities, school districts, residents and businesses.
The SBCCOG welcomes images that show how community members are being good stewards of the South Bay. Creativity is welcomed, but ideas include replacing grass with drought-tolerant plants, participating in a beach cleanup or planting a tree.
“We see from the SBCCOG’s outreach in the community and the response to some of the events we host, such as rain barrel distributions in conjunction with West Basin [Municipal Water District], that South Bay residents are truly committed to helping the environment,” said Carson Council Member and SBCCOG Chair Cedric Hicks. “We hope that they will capture some of the amazing things they are doing in their yards and communities so we can shine a light on them as examples.”
The contest kicked off October 12, 2023. Entries must be received by 5 p.m., January 10, 2024 (the deadline was recently extended from December 15, 2023). Ten finalists will be selected by the SBCCOG staff and board of directors. The winner will be selected by a vote of those who RSVP to the 24th annual General Assembly. The winning image will be announced and displayed at the event on March 28, 2024.
