Hermosa Beach City Manager Tom Bakaly was surprised to learn recently that the town’s third-highest tax generator isn’t a grocery store or manufacturer but an Internet-technology company he’d never heard of.
“I Googled them,” he said. “It’s amazing that I’m the city manager and our third-highest sales tax producer is something I don’t know anything about. The takeaway is that just because something’s new doesn’t mean it’s disruptive.”
With that anecdote, Bakaly captured the theme of February 26th’s 17th annual General Assembly of the South Bay Cities Council of Governments in Carson titled “Governing in an Era of Disruptive Technologies.”
